Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section of the stem of a common broom (Cytisus sp.). The ribbed structures on the stem provide additional structural strength and also increase the photosynthetic area of the plant. Polarised light shows bright areas of supporting sclerenchyma as a thin ring with extensions to the base and tips of the ribs. Magnification: x39 at 10cm wide.
