Transverse section of the stem of sedge (Carex sp.). The genus Carex contains over 2,000 species in the Cyperaceae family. Three leaves emerge from the lower part of the stem resulting in the triangular profile of the stem. This contrasts with the round profile of rush stems. The stem bears the flower and is sometimes referred to as the culm. Magnification: x12.5 at 10cm wide.
