Hydrothermal habitat. Hydrothermal mussels on the slope of Northwest Eifuku volcano near a seafloor hot spring called Champagne vent, in the Mariana Arc region of the Western Pacific Ocean. Other animals living among the mussels include shrimp, limpets, and Galatheid crab. High temperature vents at the Champagne site emit plumes of minerals which dissolve in water superheated by magma (molten rock). The minerals precipitate out and form crusts or mats around the vents over time. The heat and minerals provide an energy source that supports an ecology of organisms adapted to these conditions.
