Hands of a patient with longitudinal (lengthwise) melanonychia and habit-tic deformities on both thumbnails. Melanonychia is a nail discolouration caused by the pigment melanin. It may be the equivalent of a mole on the skin, be due to infection or injury, or a sign of disease such as skin cancer. The habit-tic deformity presents as ridges on the nails. They are caused by external trauma to the base of the nail due to skin picking.
