Light micrograph through a section of a human appendix showing acute phlegmonous appendicitis. Perforation can cause localised or generalised peritonitis. A phlegmon is otherwise known as an abscess, frequently caused by bacteria. An inflamed or perforated appendix can be walled off by the adjacent greater omentum or small bowel loops, resulting in phlegmonous or focal abscess.
