Incisional hernia in the abdomen of a 79 year old female patient. A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the abdominal wall. An incisional hernia is a type of hernia caused by an incompletely-healed surgical wound. This hernia is a result of closure of a stoma (hole) in the abdomen wall that was used as part of treatment for diverticulitis.
