Anal fistulas and abscesses, illustration. A fistula is an abnormal opening that connects two or more organs or spaces in the body. There are two fistulas, one at lower left between the rectum and the skin and one at centre right within the rectal wall. Near each fistula is an abscess (brown), a painful pus-filled swelling caused by infection. Gastrointestinal fistulas are treated with surgery to repair the opening. Abscesses are treated with antibiotics.
