Real depth and apparent depth. Illustration showing how an object under a glass block appears closer than it actually is. This is due to the refractive power of the glass. Light travels at different velocities in different media, and as light passes from one medium to another it appears to bend. As light travels faster in air than in glass, the image of the object below the glass has been 'bent' away from its true position, making it appear closer to the observer.
