Telephone earpiece and mouthpiece, diagram. Speaking into the mouthpiece of a telephone produces mechanical variations in the carbon microphone, which alters its resistance. This varies the electric current which is transmitted to the earpiece of another telephone. The varying current passes round the coils of an electromagnet, which attracts an iron disc. The movements of the iron disc create sound waves.
