Caterpillar of the elephant hawk-moth (Deilephila elpenor) resting on the stem of enchanter's nightshade (Circaea lutetiana) in a garden habitat. This distinctive caterpillar has large eye spots and resembles to an elephant's trunk. The flight period for the adult moth is May to July with a single generation each year. The species is a member of the Sphingidae family and is found throughout the UK and Europe. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in August.
