Illustration of distant quasar P172+18 and its radio jets. It is currently the most distant quasar with radio jets ever found and studied by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Light from P172+18 has travelled for about 13 billion years to reach us on Earth. Quasars are galaxies which have supermassive black holes at their centre and they are characterised by the emission of high energy jets of material.
