19th Century mesmerism demonstration. 1891 illustration showing a demonstration of the theory of mesmerism. Mesmerism, also known as animal magnetism, was the name given by the Austrian doctor Franz Mesmer (1734-1815, left) to what he believed to be an invisible natural force (lebensmagnetismus) possessed by all animate and inanimate objects. He believed that the force could have physical effects, including healing.
