Sponge spicule, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Sponges are simple multicellular animals, most species of which are marine. The spicules form an internal skeleton (endoskeleton) that supports the sponge's body. The classification of sponges is based on the shape of the spicules and their composition.
