The Refuge was formerly the site of a heavily-polluted nuclear weapons plant. The US Fish and Wildlife Service opened much of the site to visitors in late 2018. However, the central area, where nuclear weapons-related production occurred, remains closed. Environmental groups opposed construction of the Candelas development on the grounds that residual plutonium and other contaminants may still pose health hazards. Photographed in December 2018.
