Apollo 15 splashdown. Apollo 15 command module ('Endeavor') descending to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, at 20:45 UTC (15:45 local time) on 7 August 1971, some 530 kilometres north of Honolulu, Hawaii. It carried NASA astronauts David R. Scott, Alfred M. Worden and James B. Irwin safely back to Earth following their mission to the Moon (26 July to 7 August 1971). Only two of the three parachutes functioned correctly, resulting in a descent velocity of 35 kilometres per hour. The command module is cone-shaped with a base diameter of 3.9 metres. The three astronauts were picked up by helicopter and flown to the prime recovery ship USS Okinawa.
