Pearl Harbor and US naval base, Hawaii, illustration. This US naval base was established in a lagoon harbour on the island of Oahau, Hawaii. The rights over the area were granted to the USA by treaty in 1875, with Hawaii later becoming a US state in 1959. Pearl Harbor became the headquarters of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet. The naval base here was attacked by Japan on 7 December 1941, an event that brought the USA into World War II.
