Neural pathway, illustration. The sensory neuron (nerve cell) detects a stimulus and passes a signal to the interneuron. The interneuron passes the signal to the motor neuron, which effects a response. An example of such a neural pathway is a reflex arc, an involuntary response to a stimulus (such as pain) that allows a quick action by by-passing the conscious brain.
