Islamic irrigation system, illustration. Wells have been sunk into a hillside to reach and extract water trapped below ground. The water is brought to the surface at the base of the hill at lower right, and used to irrigate fields and gardens. Systems such as these were developed and in use during the Islamic Golden Age from the 8th to the 14th century.
