Solar system map, 18th century. Produced by English theologian and mathematician William Whiston (1667-1752), and published in around 1712. This chart formed part of his work as a lecturer on natural philosophy at coffee houses such as Button's in London. These lectures popularized contemporary science. The chart shows the path of numerous comets, as well as the Sun and the known planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) and their moons. The text includes references to Edmund Halley and Isaac Newton. Other scientists and the current astronomical theories of the day are mentioned in the extensive text.
