Infected Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito dusted with fluorescent tracking powder (red). Dusting makes it possible to trace a mosquito as it obtains a blood meal. This female has been infected by Plasmodium relictum (avian malaria). C. quinquefasciatus is a vector for several disease-causing arboviruses. These include West Nile Virus (WNV), Zika virus and several encephalitis viruses. Photographed in a research laboratory.
