Carl (1896-1957) and Gerty Cori (1896-1984), US biochemists and Nobel Laureates in their laboratory. Carl graduated in medicine at Prague in 1920, and married his classmate Gerty Radnitz in the same year. They moved to America in 1922, and formed a team until Gerty's death in 1951. Their best known joint research was in determining the precise biochemical process involved in the conversion of glucose to glycogen in the body. They also described the reverse reaction, where glycogen (an energy store in the liver and muscles) is converted back to glucose. In 1947, they shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Photographed in 1947.
