Closed vocal cords, illustration drawn from above. These cords (also called vocal folds) are located in the larynx (voice box), in the lower part of the throat. Here they are taut, meaning they can produce sound as air from the lungs is passed through them. This air resonates around the vocal cords to produce vocal sounds, such as singing and speech.
