Open vocal cords, illustration drawn from above. These cords (also called vocal folds) are located in the larynx (voice box), in the lower part of the throat. Here they are in the normal respiratory open position. In this position the vocal cords are relaxed, allowing air to pass backwards and forwards without producing any vocal sounds. When taut they produce vocal sounds (e.g. singing and speech) as air from the lungs is passed through them.
