Fritz Haber (1868-1934), German chemist. Haber is famous for developing a method of making ammonia. Nitrogen compounds were needed for agricultural fertilisers and for explosives, as natural sources of nitrates were becoming depleted. The process, developed together with C. Bosch, involves heating atmospheric nitrogen under pressure with hydrogen and an iron catalyst. Bosch helped to develop the process on an industrial scale. The Bosch-Haber process was used industrially from 1913. Haber won the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on ammonia synthesis.
