Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Escherichia coli (E.coli). It is the best understood living organism and is widely used in genetic research. This rod-shaped bacterium lives in intestinal tracts of humans and animals. It is usually not harmful but some strains cause cystitis and diarrhoea. Magnification: x925 at 10cm wide.
