Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of rye grass pollen (Lolium perenne). Pollen is an allergen, responsible for hay fever (seasonal rhinitis). Tree pollens cause hay fever in spring, grass pollens in summer. Symptoms are itchy eyes and acute inflammation of the nose, and sometimes the throat.
