Editorial use only Siemens CT (computed tomography) scanner. A scanner developed by EMI, a UK company better known for its music and recording business. Introduced in 1972, and later described as computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scan), it produces three dimensional virtual images that show what a surgeon would see during an operation and allows doctors to inspect the inside of the body without having to operate or perform unpleasant examinations. The CT scanner was 'the greatest legacy' of The Beatles, with the massive profits resulting from their record sales enabling EMI to fund scientific research including into computerised tomography.
