The Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus leucocephalus - is a white headed fish eagle that ranges from Canada to Mexico. National symbol of the USA and Mexico. The cry of the Bald eagle is rather like a sea gull, which is often dubbed in Hollywood films with the more aggressive call of the Red-tailed Hawk. The pink tongue is flexible and helps them to lift, pull, and swallow food with the assistance of two ridges of backward facing pointed papillae in the roof of the upper mandible. Despite its exalted heraldic position there was a disastrous population crash due to DDT pesticide. It is now recovering and huge numbers gather in autumn for the salmon runs. A new crisis is occurring due to lead poisoning from ammunition ingested from animal carcases.
