Illustration of three plague doctors in traditional costume. Plague doctors treated patients during the waves of epidemic bubonic plague, and the costume is particularly associated with the European epidemics of the mid-17th century. As well as treating patients, they kept records of fatalities and performed autopsies on plague victims. The long beak contained aromatic herbs thought to keep the disease at bay. Contemporary understanding held the disease was spread by miasma, or bad air.
