BAL56600 Princess Tarakanova, 1864 (oil on canvas) by Flavitsky, Konstantin Dmitrievich (1830-66); 245x187.5 cm; Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: Tarakanova (1745-75) claimed to be the daughter of Alexei Razumovsky and Empress Elizabeth of Russia. She was arrested in Livorno, Tuscany, by Alexei Grigoryevich Orlov, who had been sent by Empress Catherine II to retrieve her. She was imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress, where she died of tuberculosis that December and was buried in the graveyard of the fortress. This painting depicts the legend that Tarakanova was killed by the 1777 flood but in reality she had died two years earlier.); Russian, out of copyright.
