This was popular for 18th century portraits because it added an air of grandeur, and wouldn\'t look dated within a few years. The costume itself probably didn\'t exist, but was adapted from studies of paintings and fabric. The salmon pink colouring of the cloak and belt creates a dazzling contrast with the gleaming black satin of his clothes.
