Light micrograph of a section through a foetal thymus gland. The thymus is an organ that hosts maturing immune system cells called T cells (T lymphocytes, purple). The dense areas are the thymic cortex, which host lots of lymphocytes. The lighter areas, the thymic medulla, host fewer lymphocytes. The thymus is most active in children up to puberty. It deteriorates throughout adulthood. Magnification: x20 when printed at 15cm wide.
