741486 Sarcophagus of Saint Marcelle in the crypt, 5th century AD (stone) by Gallo-Roman; Basilica of Mary Magdalene, St. Maximin-La-Sainte-Baume, France; (add.info.: St. Marcelle was a Roman lady in the 5th century AD who was known for her piety and generosity to the poor and sick. After the invasion of Rome by Alaric and the Visigoths in 410, she was tortured and died of her wounds. According to legend her tomb rests in the crypt of the basilica. The figures at the centre of the sarcophagus depict Jesus laying his hand on a woman, probably the saint; the frieze on the top depicts dolphins eating fish;); French, out of copyright.
