European Data Relay System (EDRS) deployment, illustration. The satellite is being deployed from an Ariane 6 (A64) upper stage. The EDRS system will have two satellites placed in geostationary orbit that will relay data between spacecraft, satellites not in geostationary orbit and fixed ground stations. This will reduce time delays in such transmission as it allows permanent contact between all participants. This is EDRS-C, which has two main payloads. These are the Data Relay Payload (DRPL) providing relay and inter-satellite link capabilities and the commercial Hylas-3 satellite for Ka-band communication services. EDRS-C was launched on 6 August 2019.
