A large gas manometer on Rome Street, Carlisle, Cumbria, UK. This type of structure was once common at town gas works and industrial sites and was used for the temporary storage of gas for domestic use. They were known as manometers because they also provided a visual measure of the amount of gas contained: the concentric rings, three of which can be seen in this image, would rise out of the lower (grey) structure as the volume of gas increased. This image was captured in 2010 and now depicts a part of Carlisle's history, as the manometer has since been dismantled.
