Remnants of different terracotta and brick mosques, built during the 12th to 16th century can be found in Naogaon and Chapai Nawabganj, both districts in Rajshahi Division. Modern Rajshahi lies in the ancient region of Pundravardhana. The foundation of the city dates to 1634, according to epigraphic records at the mausoleum of Sufi saint Shah Makdum. The area hosted a Dutch settlement in the 18th century. The Rajshahi municipality was constituted during the British Raj in 1876. Numerous mosques were built during the five and a half centuries of Muslim rule before the British colonial period, but a few landmark monuments have remained. Bakhtiar Khilji (1205-06), the founder of Muslim rule in Bengal, had constructed several mosques, madrasas and khanqas.
