Its soaring and elaborately crowned tower has always been a focal point in the town. the church received cathedral status in 1882 when Newcastle became a city. The Cloth Market was one of Newcastle\'s principal open street markets. Johnson shows it at the beginning of the day, before the stalls, seen stacked in the middle of the market-place, have been set up for the day\'s trading. Normally this area would have been crammed with stalls and traffic moving between the Tyne Bridge and the Newgate. The early morning scene has allowed the artist to get a clear view of his main subject, the church of St. Nicholas.); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; British, out of copyright.
