1268206 In billets at Flesselles. A member of the Australian 2nd Battalion "carrying on" with his correspondence, 17-30 November 1916 (b/w photo) by Australian Photographer (20th century); Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia; (add.info.: Baldwin: CEWB notes in diary 66 that on the evening of the 25th November 1916 he picked up Baldwin, then the following day: \'Went to 2nd and 1st Bns in Fleselles and St Saveur.\' 2nd Bn left Flesselles 1 Dec 1916 JG 17/12/13. This image has for many years been shown incorrectly, its orientation being based on the turn up of the soldiers hat flap. It would seem that the soldier is in fact either wearing his hat back to front, or turned up on the wrong side. The action cover on the rifle should fasten with press studs on the left. An examination of the original negative confirms this view, with regard to the orientation of the emulsion layer. (Edwin Ride 26/03/2013). Print version in Viewing Print album shows full frame: scanned version is of broken/truncated negative. Print version cleaned and desilvered and returned to Photographs Section 23/11/12. AJ This image is now at the correct orientation. Have checked original negative with E Ride and confirmed siding of rifle. Have also amended the record to reflect that it is indeed a NEGATIVE. PLEASE NOTE THE IMAGE DISPLAYED ON THIS MICA RECORD IS THE ORIGINAL VIEWING PRINT. VICGWY 28/2/2013. Minister\'s caption: \'A member of the Australian 2nd Battalion "carrying on" with his correspondence in the muddy courtyard of his billet. Flesselles, France, November 1916.\' The muddy state of the yard was not quite so bad as the trenches. Note the canvas action cover which protects the breech of his rifle. The soldier is wearing his hat back-to-front, possibly to keep the sun out of his eye while he writes); Australian, out of copyright.
