1765224 Nicholas Carlisle, 1798-99 (enamel) by Birch, William Russell (1755-1834); 6.7x5.4 (oval) cm; Society of Antiquaries of London, UK; (add.info.: Nicholas Carlisle (1771?1847) made a fortune while employed as a purser in the East India Company from 1794 to 1799, then lost most of it speculating in shipping for the slave trade. He acted as Resident Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries in 1807. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1814 and of the Royal Irish Academy from 1815. The portrait is in enamel and framed in a gold oval case with a lock of fair hair and the initials NC on the reverse.); English, out of copyright.
