Wanted for the murder of his wife in London, Crippen fled to Canada on the transatlantic steamer SS Montrose, together with his mistress Ethel le Neve, who was disguised as a boy. The ship\'s captain sent a wireless telegram to alert the British authorities that he suspected the couple were on board. Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard boarded a faster liner and was waiting to arrest Crippen as he arrived in Canada.
