On 8 October 1895, the Hullyeondae Regiment, loyal to the Daewongun, attacked the Gyeongbokgung, overpowering its Royal Guards. Hullyeondae officers, led by Major Woo Beomseon, then allowed a group of former samurai to infiltrate and assassinate the Empress.
