Albrecht Durer's 'Whore of Babylon' engraving, one of a set of 15 biblical engravings on the Apocalypse. The 'Whore of Babylon' was the final print is the series, describing the verses 17.3 - 4 in Book of Revelation. The set was published simultaneously as a book with 15 pages with biblical text on the facing pages. Using a sharp steel tool called a burin, the artist first incised the outlines of his entire composition on a smooth copper plate. when the plate was inked only the shallow grooves cut by the burin would carry the ink.
