In an allegory on the strength of the true Christian faith, Durer depicted a steadfast knight riding untroubled past the swine-snouted figure of the Devil, and Death, who waves an hourglass symbolizing the shortness of life. Durer's knight, following St. Paul's Biblical admonition to the faithful, has shielded himself from the wiles of the devil with 'the armour of God.
