5052386 Waiting for the afternoon steamer at Red Pier, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo) by Frowde, John James (1868-1946); Manx National Heritage (Isle of Man); (add.info.: On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Waiting for the afternoon steamer round about 1860. The tide being low, the capacious ferry boats (clustered inside the Pier Head), whose job it was to transfer the passengers from the steamer out in the bay to the Pier steps. At dead low tide the sailors carried the passengers from the ferries to the steps on their backs. Some of the ferry oarsmen can be seen putting in the period of waiting on the Red Pier steps, with their sweeps standing against the Pier wall. Seaward, there is nothing beyond the Fort Anne jetty, but the point of the \'Little Head\'. This is enlarged from a plate I had made of an old stereo slide, much the worse for some seventy years of handling, but I thought it might meet some appreciative eyes if included in this collection." Additional notes: "L a mere male, with his wife, camouflaged as a cocoon, and doing the \'Grecian Bend.\'"); by Manx National Heritage .
