Funerary urn with deity, 6th century. This 47 centimetre high ceramic funerary is from Monte Alban, situated in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. The urn shows a seated deity resting his hands on his knees. The figure is depicted wearing a large headdress with feathers and five circular adornments on it. He also wears large earflares, a buccal mask and a pectoral. A cylindrical vessel is attached to the back of the urn. This vessel may have held the cremated ashes of an important individual.
