Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the ultrastructure of a liver cell (hepatocyte). The very rich supply of cytoplasmic organelles and inclusions is indicative of the high level of metabolism and complexity of liver functions. The most abundant cytoplasmic structures seen in this region of the hepatocyte are glycogen granules, mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes and tubulovesicles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Lysosomes are also seen. Magnification: x6,500 when printed at a width of 10cm.
