Single barrel of George and Edward Scheutz's calculating machine. Based on Babbage's 'difference engine' it was developed between 1837 and 1843. It was purchased for Dudley Observatory, Albany, New York and a copy made by Donkins for calculating life tables at Somerset House. From The Illustrated London News, 1853.
