1845 illustration showing an auto-da-fe (act of faith) ritual in Spain. This was a ritual of public penance carried out by the Spanish Inquisition after a punishment was decided. Execution by burning was the most extreme of these punishments. Artwork by M. Marckl published in the 1845 book Les prisons de l'Europe by Jules Alboise and Auguste Maquet.
