How a Farmer's Daughter Goes to Town in the Movies. How Many Horses Is He Driving? In this movie scene Olivia De Havilland is shown riding beside George Hayes in what looks like a sad journey for her. As the picture is of the 1870 period, Hayes appears to be driving a horse, or a team, instead of making the journey by automobile. But look below. No Horses! This is how the scene at the top of this page was filmed. An old buggy seat is placed on the rear end of the camera truck. The reins are fastened to a bar in front of Hayes, out of the camera's range. A workman riding on the truck holds a light diffuser over the actors. Sounds of the horses and harness are dubbed in at the studio. You never know the difference when you see the picture. February 26, 1939.
