Italy Harnesses Volcanoes In "Valley Of Hell" To Supply Electricity -- ***** "Valley Of Hell", where lies the little ***** Larderello. In the "Valley Of Hell", a 20-miles area of Tuscany, Northern Italy, where nearly 300 natural and man made wells shoot scalding steam high into the air, lies Italy's greatest source of electrical power the only place in the world where man has harnessed volcanoes for his use. Italy was forced to turn to this natural supply owing to her lack of coal and now the steam drives eight turbine plants supplying 32,800,000 kilowatt hours of electricity monthly. June 16, 1939.
